>> well, let me now defend john mccain a bit on that front. i disagree with him holding up chuck hagel for personal reasons, and i made that very clear off the top of the show. certainly with big defense cuts coming and with 66,000 troops in afghanistan. but this is the way the united states senate works. and it's the way the houseworked as well. if you had somebody on the house floor, and we saw this, going on the floor time and time again and rubbing people -- it's one thing to oppose a bill. >> right. >> it's one thing to oppose a war. it's one thing to oppose a surge. but chuck hagel seemed to relish in the great publicity he was getting by rubbing president bush's nose in it, by rubbing john mccain's nose in it, by rubbing his republican colleagues' nose in it. he was acting self-righteous and like he was the only holy man in washington, d.c. i'm not, again, defending what the republicans are doing today, but i think whether you talk to carl or anybody else, this is the way washington works. i said it about ted cruz. ted cruz is going to

so what john mccain said is very qualified. you put that on top of the fact that chuck hagel has said things over the past five, six, seven years that does place him outside the mainstream of american political thought when it comes to foreign policy. i think that's fair too. so i think that's what the senate is supposed to do. they're supposed to advise and consent. i think john mccain is doing it exactly like he should do it. he has problems with it, but he's going to let the president put his person in charge. i thought mccain was very fair there. mark? you take some of the things he said in the past, they're pretty bad, but he circled back. he's talked to lindsey. he's assured some other people that those are not his positions today. >> senator hagel has really big shoes to fill. the president's first two defense secretaries, fantastic. worked well with the hill, worked well with the pentagon. i think senator mccain, unlike some of the other critics that chuck hagel, has focused on the things where there really are question

. >> john mccain is not the left. john mccain had real problems with this. >> john mccain is another issue altogether on the subject. i'm not going to go there. i'm just saying, i agree with your point. we haven't heard the other side of this also, chris, which is there's some abu ghraib in "zero dark thirty." and i think coming -- both ways, this is a movie that wasn't going to win it at the end because of the backlash. >> yeah. i think -- i think the academy awards you were saying is really our second great mood ring, like our presidential elections. they really tell us so much about ourselves. they focus on race in the two big movies. "django" and "lincoln." all about slavery. the first time i've ever seen a plantation since "gone with the wind." this was realistic. i thought seth macfarlane brought back the old days of song and dance. and i know i'm old-time on this, but i thought bob hope and johnny carson were fabulous. i know everybody likes billy crystal. he brought back show biz. he really tried. there were o

john mccain and lindsey graham. >> i would like to get your take on those guys. i have been looking at them and seeing this kind of buddy movie that they are engaged in and not quite understanding what's in it for each of them. >> you know, they met with the president this week. they put out a statement how great it went to talk about immigration and key on sequester. senator graham is open to tax increases. a lot of republicans will talk about it. they feed off each other. >> isn't it because senator graham is up for election next year, i guess, right? you know, he's in a state where there are the remnants of the tea party still pretty vital. he has to move to the right and he's hitched his arms with senator mccain and they are plunging through. is that the story? >> he's out there talking about being open to tax increases. when mccain was up for re-election and faced a primary challenge, graham helped him and mccain has following in south carolina helping him for re-election. between now and then issue. >> when newtown happened, we obviously all started talking

if you look at the faces we see of the republican party, the lindsey grahams, the john mccains, the john boehners, they're angry old men. they're not appealing as human beings. forget issuewise. and clearly the democrats have barack obama. and i want to come back to a debate that we were having. you've covered president after president. it doesn't matter how they shift on the issues until they have the right delivery system, the right human beings who are not tone deaf to an attitude that this country wants. they're never going to get back. ronald reagan got that. to your point earlier, john connelley didn't get that, joe. we said this off the air. that's why he was not elected president. i think it's all moot until they change literally and figuratively the faces of the party. >> well, it can't be just the cosmetics, however. >> not cosmetics, but humanity. >> a combination of the two, it's about the subject matter they're dealing with as well as the manner in which they present it. ronald reagan -- my favorite story about ronald reagan was when he was in a deep recession, they decided
